Three
members of Colombia’s Congress will take part in an
FIU forum, Foro sobre el Referendo en Colombia, on the upcoming
constitutional referendum in their nation. The event, which will
be held Fri., Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m., is being sponsored by FIU’s
Latin American and Caribbean Center, Colombian Studies Institute
and Colombian Students Association with the support of the Consulate
of Colombia. It will be in Spanish and will be held in the MARC
Building International Pavilion, Room 290, at FIU-University
Park.
Participating in the event will be
Colombia Sen. Carlos Gaviria Diaz of the Frente Social political
party, Sen. Andres Gonzalez
Diaz of the Liberal Party, and House Representative Gina Parady
of the Liberal Party. The two liberal party members will speak
in favor of the referendum, and Gaviria Diaz will represent
the anti-referendum perspective. FIU students from the Colombian
Students Association will present a summary of the referendum's
questionnaire.
Also participating will be FIU professors Victor Uribe and
Eduardo
Gamarra.
The event is intended to educate
the community about the forthcoming elections to modify the Colombian
constitution. Proposed reforms
concern changing the size of congress, introducing controls
on the behavior of congressional members, cutting public
expenditures for salaries and pensions, and earmarking public
funds for
education
and public pensions. |
