Title VI National Resource Center
(NRC) grants, presented every three years by the U.S. Department
of Education, have been awarded
to FIU’s Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) and
Center for Transnational and Comparative Studies (TCS). Title
VI awards
are prestigious grants to which universities aspire in international
and area studies.
LACC, which received a $338,110 grant,
has been a Title IV National Resource Center for foreign language
and area studies since 1981.
LACC’s mission is to foster high-quality research, education,
and outreach on Latin America and Caribbean studies and issues.
The award funds several major initiatives at LACC: the annual Journalist
and Editor’s Workshop; teacher training workshops; study
abroad programs in Brazil and Haiti, Foreign Languages Across
the Curriculum, and library collection building. LACC is also
a proud
recipient of the Title VI Foreign Languages and Area Studies
Fellowships (FLAS). FLAS fellowships provide academic year and
summer funding
for graduate students to study Haitian Creole or Portuguese in
conjunction with area studies courses.
TCS received a $211,447 grant for
the Florida Network for Global Studies, a consortium between
University of Florida, University
of Central Florida, University of South Florida and Florida A & M
University. The organization’s mission is to enhance teaching
capacity and research in international studies, providing outreach
to the wider education, business and media communities, particularly
regarding the challenges of globalization. The award is a first
for FIU in international studies and will go toward new staff and
faculty lines, as well as faculty research, curriculum development
and library collection development in international studies. In
addition, it will sponsor a major academic conference in the spring
of 2004 on the subject of immigration and identity, as well as
teacher training workshops on international issues. The grant was
received in partnership with the International Studies Center at
the University of Florida.
