Auditions for “Memory Project” Community Performance Project: Oct. 27

Noted New York choreographer Janis Brenner will begin a three-week residency at FIU Monday, Oct. 27, with open auditions for a January dance and theater performance of “The Memory Project.”

Auditions are open to any performance artist in the community between ages 9 to 70. They will be held at the University Park campus in VH 100 on Monday from 3:30 -5:30 for theater and dance students; 6-8 p.m. for community actors, singers and dancers.

Brenner will select 10 to 11 people for the Jan. 30 – 31, 2004 show that will take place at FIU’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center. Her work is based on the lives of its performers, using a process of generating stories and story line out of the life experiences of the actors, singers and dancers she works with. Her productions are at once community based and emotionally charged.

Brenner is seeking not just dancers but a diversity of performance artists, said Sherone Price, artistic director of the FIU dance program. She wants individuals with skills such as speaking, improvising, story telling, acting, singing and dancing.

“She’s looking for all of it,” Price said. “She is asking that they move well on stage, they have some type of presence on stage.”
