Carmelo Mesa-Lago is Distinguished
Professor Emeritus of Economics and Latin American Studies at
the University of Pittsburgh. His major areas of expertise are
the
Cuban economy, economics of social security, and comparative
economies in Latin America. He is the author of 60 books and
more than 200
articles/essays published in eight languages in 33 countries.
He has served as a consultant for international organizations,
was
President of the Latin American Studies Association, and has
received many awards including three Alexander von Humboldt (Germany),
two
Senior Fulbright (Spain and Uruguay) and the University of Pittsburgh
Chancellor's Distinguished Public Service Prize and Senior Research
Prize. Recognized as one of the pioneers and world "stars" of
Cuban studies, he founded the journal/yearbook "Cuban Studies",
which he edited for two decades. He has been a visiting professor/scholar
at prestigious universities and research institutions in ten countries,
including FIU in 1999-2002.
