Vice President McGowan Cited Among
World’s Top IT Leaders

John P. McGowan
John P. McGowan, Florida International University vice president of University Technology Services and CIO, was recently recognized by Cisco Systems, Inc.’s iQ Magazine as one of 10 executives worldwide who set a standard for leadership in information technology. As a recipient of this honor, McGowan was recently invited to travel to Stockholm, Sweden, to attend the Nobel Prize ceremonies and the Cisco Public Services Nobel Summit in the company of distinguished Nobel laureates.

iQ Magazine’s annual leadership issue profiles 10 executives in the article “2003 Leaders in Internet Business.” According to John T. Chambers, president and CEO at Cisco Systems, these leaders are helping their organizations “succeed by establishing processes designed to take advantage of the productivity benefits that networking technology can provide.” Other IT executives recognized in the article were from companies/organizations ranging from AT&T Corporation and DuPont to British Telecom and the Government of Australia.

In selecting the 10 executives, the magazine focused on leaders who “have a long-term vision; acknowledge context; respect culture; establish milestones; set the foundation; integrate operations; enable productivity; anticipate change; and focus on people.” Among his recent actions that reflect these qualities, McGowan implemented the deployment of IP telephones to some 4,700 users in 58 buildings. This rapid implementation enabled FIU to realize an extraordinary return on investment via savings in telecommunications infrastructure and related IT administrative costs. McGowan is currently overseeing the implementation of the PeopleSoft student administration, financials and human and capital management applications, a massive, multiyear project that is dramatically changing administrative information systems throughout the institution.

Prior to joining FIU in June 2001, McGowan served as the chief technology officer for the University of Southern Mississippi, where he deployed an ambitious wireless network infrastructure.
