MIAMI, FL (March 28, 2007) –Florida International University Officials have announced Luis Mirón as dean of the College of Education.
“FIU is a major research university that has quickly established itself as an incubator of academic excellence,” said Mirón.
Mirón hopes to strengthen, enhance and sustain the College of Education’s stature as a high research productive academic unit. With a two-decade background in urban school reform and community development, Mirón will build upon FIU’s urban mission as Miami’s public research university and make a difference in the lives of children in Miami-Dade and Broward County. He hopes to help shape and ultimately institutionalize FIU’s role in improving urban education locally and nationally.
Mirón was previously the program chair in the College of Education’s Department of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to this position, he served as chair of the Department of Education at University of California – Irvine for five years. Mirón has also taught at University of California – Berkley, Loyola University, Tulane University, the University of New Orleans and Vanderbilt University.
His research has garnered more than $1.6 million in funded grants and contracts. In addition, Mirón has authored, co-authored and edited seven books, including “The New Discourses of Educational Leadership and Urban Schools: The New Social Spaces of Resistance.” His written work focuses on urban school reform, educational equity and educational leadership.
Born in Guatemala City, Mirón arrived in the United States when he was 4 years-old. He received his doctorate and bachelor’s degrees from Tulane University and his master’s from Louisiana State University. Mirón will join the FIU community on June 2007. He is moving to Miami with his wife, Rosa Ann Mirón, who was the Assistant Vice Chancellor at the University of Illinois.
