Street naming ceremony to honor the memory of Professor Jose A. Marques

MIAMI – A portion of SW 8th Street, from 107th Avenue to 117th Avenue will be named “Dr. Jose A. Marques Boulevard” in honor of the late attorney, professor, and founding member of the criminal justice program at Florida International University.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe A. Martinez, whose district includes the roadway, sponsored the resolution approving the state designation. The item was passed unanimously at a Board of County Commissioners meeting in May. Commissioner Martinez will be joined by State Representative Juan Carlos Zapata; Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez; other Board of County Commissioners; Florida State University System Chancellor Mark B. Rosenberg, and FIU President Modesto A. Maidique; as well as other federal, state, and local officials for the special event.

The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 8 at FIU-University Park’s main entrance located on SW 8th Street and 112th Avenue in West Miami-Dade County.

“Dr. Marques has left behind an undeniable legacy of service to this community, particularly in the area of law enforcement,” said Commissioner Martinez. “He has been a mentor to countless South Florida police officers and his memory will live on through their service and in this street designation. The new boulevard will honor his commitment to education and his dedication to equality and justice.”

Professor Marques was born in Cuba and practiced corporate law on the island before moving to Miami with his wife and eldest son in 1960. In 1973, he started teaching at FIU’s criminal justice department. During his 30-year tenure with the university, he founded and directed a field internship program designed to give students an opportunity to work with criminal justice agencies, such as the courts, police and corrections departments.

In addition to his work at FIU, Marques was appointed chairman of the Florida Board of Correctional Education by then Florida Governor Bob Graham. He was subsequently reappointed by both Governors Robert “Bob” Martinez and Lawton Chiles. Marques also served on the Executive Board of Citizens’ Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County and the board of the Dade-Miami Criminal Justice Council.

Professor Marques passed away on January 12, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Amalia Teresita; his two sons Javier Ignacio and Jose Antonio Jr.; and three grandchildren Natalie, Adrian and Cristina.
