FIU/UM to screen documentary on Cuban hip-hop movement

MIAMI – Florida International University’s Cuban Research Institute and the University of Miami’s Latin American Studies Program and Center for Latin American Studies are pleased to announce the screening of a cutting edge documentary that depicts the lives of three young rappers as they lead Cuba’s underground hip-hop movement.

‘East of Havana’ is a blunt, unflinching close-up on the lives of Soandry, Magyori, and Mikki, who are compelled to address their generation’s future from the confines of a Cuban ghetto. Possessing undeniable talent and charisma, these fearless performers push self-expression to its sharpest, riskiest, and most triumphant point. ‘East of Havana’ presents a rare, raw view of what it is like to be young, black and revolutionary in contemporary Cuba.

The screening will take place on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. at the University of Miami’s Cosford Cinema and will be followed by a round table discussion on ‘rap, race and youth culture in contemporary Cuba’ with filmmaker Jauretsi Saizarbitoria, scholar Alejandro de la Fuente, and Ariel Fernández Díaz, former organizer of the Cuban hip hop movement. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
