Tough economic times have not dampened the sense of goodwill and giving at FIU.

The 2008 United Way campaign raised nearly $250,000 from Oct. 23 to Nov. 21, approximately the same amount collected last year.

“I was touched by the commitment and drive of the United Way campaign committee members and ambassadors to achieve high levels of participation and to organize a multitude of events to raise money,” said Divina Grossman, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “It was clear to me that our FIU community recognized the importance of contributing to United Way, especially at this time.”

United Way provides critical services to the neediest and more vulnerable in Miami-Dade County. Members of the organization focus on helping children and youth achieve their potential, promoting financial stability and independence, and improving people’s health.

“Because of all that is happening in our community, the funds will be needed even more this year,” Grossman said.
