Frost Art Museum launches Target Wednesday After Hours series

One of the Frost Art Museum’s keystone community-outreach programs, Target Wednesday After Hours gives FIU and local community members the opportunity to engage in a multifaceted approach to the arts.

More than 450 members of the community came together Jan. 7 for the kick-off of the Target Wednesday After Hours 2009 series. Amidst the backdrop of the visually stunning Frost Art Museum, guests mingled to the sounds of jazz vocalist Nicole Henry, who was accompanied by associate professor and Director of Jazz Performance Mike Orta and musicians from the FIU School of Music.

Held at 8 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month, Target Wednesday After Hours events are free and open to the public. The 2009 series will complement the museum’s innovative exhibitions with lectures, films, panel discussions, music and dance performances, poetry slams, performance art and more.

“Target Wednesday After Hours has given a boost to a long-running effort at the Frost to offer our students, faculty and community the opportunity to stay at the university for amazing events that will bring together all the arts in exciting new ways,” says Frost Director Carol Damian. “We can now attract our immediate audience to the museum for events that go beyond just viewing an exhibition. Target Wednesdays are fun, informative and educational and will make the Frost Art Museum a cultural center for [University Park].”

The series’ interdisciplinary approach is reflected in the Frost Art Museum’s collaboration with various colleges within the university, which will co-sponsor each event. Partners include the College of Business Administration and the Honors College, among others.

A special reception before the Jan. 7 event honored more than 20 “Best in Class” honorees — students, alumni and faculty who embody the best of FIU. The “Best in Class” advertising campaign began in 2007 as a way to spotlight high school valedictorians who chose to attend FIU. It later expanded to include scholar-athletes, student scholars, alumni, and FIU faculty and researchers.
