FIYou profile: Jose Gabilondo

Name: José Gabilondo

Hometown: Miami/Boston/Santiago de Cuba

Job Title/Department: Associate Professor, College of Law

In a nutshell: I teach upper-level electives about financial law and taxation and the first-year contracts course. I also research debt markets and, separately, gender.

Number of years at FIU: Five

What do you enjoy most about your job? An impossible question, but it would be the incredible meaning that my life has from getting to pursue my intellectual values in the company of teacher-scholars, students, staff, and, yes, even deans in a culture that is so Hispanic and Hispanic-friendly. I know how goofy that sounds but FIU really is unique.

What do you think faculty/staff/students should know about your department? That we are vibrant, contentious, and highly energetic.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why? Actually, I loved it when we were in the Green Library (pre-Starbucks, that is) because of the hubbub and the beautiful views. So the benches in and around the breezeway are probably still my favorite spots, especially when there’s a breeze.

If there’s one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU, what would it be? That given the extraordinary return on investment that FIU produces in terms of getting people started on careers and mobility, this is the last place that state budget cuts should be allocated.

Family snapshot: My parents, brother Fernando, and I left Cuba in 1967 and settled in Boston, where my sister was born. She just had a beautiful baby, Nico, who is my godson.

Word that best describes you: Engaged

First paying job: busboy, Latin-O Restaurant in mid-Cambridge, Massachusetts, when I was in junior high.

Favorite TV show: Dexter

Your proudest accomplishment: At a personal level, it would be having gotten a group home for my developmentally disabled brother when I was in college, something that is easier to do in Massachusetts than in Florida I might add.

What do you do when you’re not working at FIU? Avid reader and ocean swimmer
