FIU applying to create American Nuclear Society chapters

FIU will apply for the creation of a student chapter and a professional chapter of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) in April with approval expected in June 2012. This will put our growing nuclear programs in the national limelight and let all other nuclear programs in the country know of our successes and desire to continue to grow and collaborate with others. The chapters are expected to bring in nuclear experts and distinguished speakers from the nuclear research areas. The professional chapter will bring nuclear professionals from across southeast Florida to monthly meetings and build collaborations between FIU students and programs and nuclear professionals and the companies that hire them.

Students will participate in ANS student meetings, an annual student conference, professional technical conferences, career fairs, and will be made aware of the many internships and other opportunities out there for young nuclear professionals. For example, the 2012 ANS Student Conference is titled, “Nuclear Science and Technology: Past, Present and Future,” and is being held April 12-15 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Students will be presenting their research in the following nuclear areas:

  • Accelerator Applications
  • Aerospace Applications
  • Biology & Nuclear Medicine
  • Decommissioning, Decontamination & Reutilization
  • Environmental Sciences
  • Fuel Cycle & Waste Management
  • Fusion Energy
  • General
  • Human Factors, Instrumentation & Controls
  • Isotopes & Radiation
  • Materials Science & Technology
  • Mathematics & Computation
  • Nuclear Criticality Safety
  • Nuclear Installations Safety
  • Operations & Power
