MIAMI – Florida International University has several experts able to comment on the swine flu and its threat on public health. Our experts can discuss a wide range of topics, including pandemics, outbreaks and infectious diseases. Florida International University is home to one of only two accredited schools of public health in the state.

Fernando Treviño, Ph.D.

As dean of FIU’s Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work, Treviño is an expert in communicable diseases, outbreaks, public health and pandemics. From 1999 to 2007, Treviño was founding dean and professor of the School of Public Health at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. During that period, he also served as director of the Texas Institute for Hispanic Health in the School of Public Health and as director of the school’s Institute for Public Health Research. Treviño also has served as executive director of the American Public Health Association in Washington, D.C., and as executive editor of the American Journal of Public Health. He is a past president of the World Federation of Public Health Associations based in Geneva, Switzerland. Treviño is fluent in Spanish.

John A. Rock, M.D.

Dr. Rock, founding dean and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs of the FIU College of Medicine, is the former chancellor of the Health Sciences Center at Louisiana State University and had management oversight of Louisiana’s statewide Charity Hospital System. At LSU, he established a School of Public Health and held the titles of chancellor emeritus and professor of obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and public health. He is an expert on outbreaks, public health and pandemics. Rock received his M.S. in public health at Harvard University in 2003.

Mary Jo Trepka, Ph.D.

Mary Jo Trepka is an associate professor with the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work at FIU and an expert in infectious diseases. Prior to arriving at FIU, Trepka was the Director of the Office of Epidemiology and Disease Control with the Miami-Dade County Health Department.

Dr. Juan Acuña, MD

Dr. Juan M. Acuña is an associate professor of Human and Molecular Genetics and associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. From 2005 to 2008, Acuña was Director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) National Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Program. Acuña has extensive experience in clinical and public health/epidemiology at the level of both teaching and practice. In his native Colombia, he was associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the National University of Colombia (1991-2000) and concurrently professor of law and genetics at Javeriana University. He then served as the CDC assignee in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology to the Louisiana Office of Public Health (2000-2005) and was on faculty at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from 2005-2008. Acuña is fluent in Spanish.

Kalai Mathee, Ph.D.

Professor Kalai Mathee is the chairwoman of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the FIU College of Medicine. She is well-respected nationally and internationally by researchers in multiple fields, including pseudomonas pathogenesis, microbial biofilm development, regulation of prokaryotic transcription and phage molecular biology. She has published more than 40 articles and several book chapters in the fields of molecular microbiology, forensic science and bioinformatics – many of which are recognized as seminal and have been selected for journal highlights.
