Presidential Search Advisory Committee to interview 13 candidates

Updated at 3:30 p.m.

Dear members of the university community:

The Presidential Search Advisory Committee began work today on the final phase of the presidential search process. This group of 26 representatives of the university community has kindly accepted responsibility for helping FIU select its fifth president.

The intense period that began today is expected to conclude on Saturday, April 25, with the announcement of the new university president. The selected candidate will succeed Modesto A. Maidique, who is stepping down after serving as president of FIU for 23 years.

As you know, we are engaged in a search process that was specifically designed to respond to the needs of candidates participating in a presidential search process in the sunshine. At the same time, we wanted to attract high-caliber talent.

At its meeting today, the Presidential Search Advisory Committee considered 34 candidates for the position of president of FIU and had extensive discussions about the qualifications and experience of each candidate. The committee also spent time discussing how it would ensure that all candidates receive equal consideration.  Ultimately, the committee chose to advance 13 candidates to the first round of interviews, which will take place Sunday and Monday.

The list of candidates, in alphabetical order, who have been invited to interview with the Presidential Search Advisory Committee is as follows:

Ronald Berkman
Angel Cabrera
James A. Cooney
Lawrence Czarda
William Flores
Alan Goodridge
Brooks Keel
Allan Myerson
Robert D. Newman
Mark Rosenberg
Carlos Santiago
Ana Maria Viamonte-Ros
Ellen Wartella

By the end of Monday, the name of up to five candidates will be forwarded to the Board of Trustees Presidential Search Committee for consideration.

On Tuesday, the BOT Presidential Search Committee will interview up to  five candidates and invite up to three to participate in individual full-day interviews with members of the internal university constituency and community supporters of the university. These interviews are scheduled on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of next week (April 22-24). Please reference the full timeline of the process and make plans to participate where appropriate. After each session, participants will be asked to complete a candidate feedback form to express comments.

On Saturday, April 25, the BOT Presidential Search Committee will receive input from the on-campus interviews through the executive search firm and select one or two candidates to present to the full board. The final selection of the board that afternoon will need to be ratified by the Board of Governors.

Our goal throughout this process has been to recruit highly qualified candidates while ensuring efficiency and transparency. We are faced with a significant task, finding a worthy successor to Dr. Modesto A. Maidique, who has guided FIU for more than two decades. I thank the members of the Presidential Search Advisory Board, led by Executive Dean of Business Joyce Elam, my fellow trustees, and many members of the university staff, especially Senior Vice President and CFO Vivian Sanchez, who has been instrumental in this process. Everyone has given of their time selflessly for the benefit of the institution.

You may find more information on the search, including the position description and detailed timeline of events, at the official presidential search site.
