Stempel Public Health Association to celebrate National Public Health Week


The Stempel Public Health Association (SPHA), an organization representing students who are interested in public health, have planned a full week of events in celebration of National Public Health Week 2009. The highlight of the week will be a presentation by representatives of the Miami-Dade County Public Health Department, “Are You Prepared?” on April 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will focus on hurricane preparedness.

With the exception of Wednesday’s event at the Farmer’s Market, all of the events will take place in the Graham Center Pit at University Park.

Monday, April 6: “Global Public Health Initiatives” and “This is Public Health” photo contest, 2 to 4 p.m.

Tuesday, April 7: “HIV Awareness” – stop by for free brochures and condoms, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wednesday, April 8: “Health in the Workplace” – drop by and pick up a sample of free herbal tea along with a list of ways to relax, noon to 3 p.m., Organic Farmer’s Market, by the UP fountain

Thursday, April 9: “Are You Prepared?” – Representatives from the Miami-Dade County Public Health Department want to help you determine whether you’re prepared for a hurricane or other disaster, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Friday, April 10: “Healthy Home” – Learn healthy cooking habits, ‘go outside and play,’ and learn how to exercise in  your dorm room, 2 to 4 p.m.
