FIU unveils state-of-the art traffic research laboratory

WHAT: Florida International University is celebrating the grand opening of the FIU Integrated Intelligent Transportation System Laboratory (IITS) at the Lehman Center for Transportation Research (LCTR) with U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart and other officials on hand. FIU-IITS is one of the most sophisticated laboratories in the nation, equipped with a video wall, central software, ITS devices, servers and operator workstations. The result of a joint effort between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing, the lab is a smaller scale version of the  FDOT traffic management centers.

 WHO: U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart will attend the ceremony, along with representatives from FIU and transportation agencies in South Florida, including the Florida Department of Transportation, Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, Miami-Dade Transit, and the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization.

 WHEN AND WHERE: 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2009 in Room EC 3730, third floor of the FIU Engineering Center, 10555 West Flagler Street, located on the corner of Flagler Street and Southwest 107th Avenue.

 WHY:  The laboratory will be functioning as a major research and education tool, allowing researchers to analyze live conditions of the Florida transportation systems and develop means to improve mobility and safety. It also will allow students a hands-on experience with transportation system operations and management.

The Lehman Center for Transportation Research (LCTR) is committed to conducting research and training to improve traffic mobility and safety, and is the only one of its kind in South Florida. LCTR was established in 1993 with the support of the late Congressman William Lehman.
