Albert Dotson, Sr., and Albert Maury ’96 ’02 were elected chair and vice chair, respectively, of the FIU Board of Trustees at the board’s June 12 meeting. Maury was also appointed chair of the BOT’s Finance and Audit Committee and BOT treasurer.

Both men begin their two-year terms September 1, 2009.

At the same meeting, the board honored outgoing Chair David Parker by naming him chairman emeritus. Parker remains an active member of the board.

For Dotson, one of FIU’s most enthusiastic advocates and the board’s current vice chair, this latest leadership role caps decades of volunteer leadership on behalf of the university he has grown to love.

“I am honored and humbled at the confidence my fellow trustees have shown in appointing me chair,” said Dotson after the meeting.

Chairman and CEO of consulting firm Puryear, Inc., Dotson has served on the BOT since 2001. Previous to his appointment to the BOT, he served on the FIU Foundation Board from 1983-2001. Since March of last year, he has served as the BOT’s liaison to the Foundation Board. Dotson was a member of the BOT Presidential Search Committee that appointed Dr. Mark Rosenberg the next president of FIU and served on the presidential search committee in 1986 that hired President Modesto A. Maidique.

An engaged member of our community, his community service includes participation on the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Board of Governors, the boards of Barry University and the Dade County Fair and Exposition, and the Orange Bowl Committee, among other community endeavors. He is an alumnus of Wayne State University.

Dotson and his wife Earlene, who celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in July, live in Palmetto Bay. The couple has five grown children and 15 grandchildren.

Maury, who holds bachelor degrees in business administration and accounting from FIU, is the first alumnus appointed to the BOT. President and COO of Leon Medical Centers Health Plan, he has an extensive background in health care finance, executive negotiations, budgeting and contracting.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Maury is an active board member of the Bertha Abess Children’s Center and served on the board of the Alliance for Aging for six years.

Maury lives in Miami with his wife Silvia and their four children, Alexandra, Steffany, Katerina and Albert, Jr.
