New Hospitality interim dean, BBC interim vice provost named

As School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Dean Joseph West vacates his two roles, Associate Dean Joan Remington steps in to replace him as the school’s interim dean. Associate professor Steven Moll will serve as BBC’s interim vice provost.

In a memorandum to the FIU community, Douglas Wartzok, the university’s interim provost and executive vice president, announced yesterday that School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Associate Dean Joan Remington will serve as the school’s interim dean effective July 1.
As School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Dean Joseph West vacates his two roles, Associate Dean Joan Remington steps in to replace him as the school’s interim dean. Associate professor Steven Moll will serve as BBC’s interim vice provost.

Remington will step into the position vacated by Dean Joseph West, who last year postponed his resignation to continue for an additional year in that role.

West’s responsibilities as vice provost for Biscayne Bay Campus now will be overseen by Steven Moll, associate professor and faculty chair in Hospitality and Tourism Management, who has agreed to serve as BBC’s interim vice provost.

“I am immensely grateful for Dean West’s willingness to simultaneously fill these two major leadership positions,” Wartzok said. “However, after 10 years as dean, a return to the faculty is too tempting to further postpone. Accordingly, he will take his long-delayed sabbatical during the 2009-’10 year after which, he will continue as professor in the School of Hospitality Management.”

Among West’s many accomplishments as dean are the establishment of the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, revenues of which benefit the School of Hospitality Management students; the improvement of the school’s facilities at BBC through several contributions (West has brought in more than $22 million to FIU through his initiatives with donors); and the establishment of the university’s campus in Tianjin, China.

In his one-year tenure as BBC vice provost, West improved the campus’ appearance and worked with all student services to improve customer service.

“I want to thank Joe West for his dedicated leadership not only in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and on the Biscayne Bay Campus,” Wartzok said, “but also in the university, the community and the industry.”
