FIU breaks ground on Ambulatory Care Center

Facility to be part of university’s Academic Health Sciences complex

MIAMI – Florida International University will break ground this week on the FIU Ambulatory Care Center, the most recent addition to FIU’s Academic Health Sciences complex.

The ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 30 at 9 a.m. on the FIU Modesto A. Maidique Campus, 11200 SW 8th Street in West Miami Dade County.

The 18,000-square-foot ambulatory care facility, made possible by a partnership between Miami-Dade County and FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, will consist of an ambulatory surgery center and an outpatient diagnostic center. The facility will be open to the general community for diagnosis, treatment and care and will initially focus on family medicine/primary care and sports medicine.

“This building is but the latest addition to what we hope will be a healthcare complex that will both serve in the treatment and care of our community and as a working classroom for our medical students,” said FIU President Modesto A. Maidique. “This could not have been possible without the strong relationship we have forged with Miami-Dade County.”

In 2007, the Miami-Dade County Commission, as well as Mayor Carlos Alvarez endorsed a resolution allocating $10 million to fund the center from the Building Better Communities General Obligation Bonds (GOB) to construct and improve healthcare facilities in order to promote accessibility to quality health care services.

“This center will be a critical resource for residents in southwest Miami-Dade and throughout the county,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez. “Soon, those in greatest need of medical attention will have a state-of-the-art facility at their doorstep and some of the best healthcare providers in the county caring for them.”

Added Dr John Rock, dean of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine: “The center will be a vital part of South Florida’s only public medical school. We are delighted to partner with Miami-Dade County to make this possible and improve the quality of life of the citizens in South Florida.”

On Aug. 3, the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and President Maidique will welcome the College’s inaugural class of 43 students.
