FIU catches “Reefer Madness”

The stage musical is being performed at Modesto a. Maidique Campus through Aug. 9 as part of the FIU Alternative Theatre Summer Festival.

July 21

FIU is presenting “Reefer Madness: The Musical,” a stage production based on a 1936 movie, July 22-Aug. 9, as part of the FIU Alternative Theatre Summer Festival.

The campy production features elaborate song-and-dance numbers looking at the hysteria surrounding a group of clean-cut kids who fall prey to “the evil weed.” Director Marina Pareja, FIU Theatre’s costume shop supervisor, says that the story has a greater message: “It’s about how people in power can use fear to manipulate and intimidate the public.”

A highly stylized and satirical commentary, “Reefer Madness” is not specifically pro-hemp or pro-marijuana. Instead, Pareja says, “[it] conveys the idea that authority and power can be dangerously abused and it asks audiences to be aware of propaganda messages.”

The Alternative Theatre Summer Festival was created in 2006 and has offered a mix of feisty and irreverent performances and provocative productions. The festival is committed to bringing Miami’s cultural diversity together on stage. Productions are directed by FIU’s own faculty and/or students and performed by FIU students.

“Reefer Madness” is performed at 8 p.m. at Modesto A. Maidique Campus July 22-Aug. 2 in DM 150 before moving to the Art South Performing Art Center in Homestead Aug. 7-9. (Sunday performances are scheduled for 5 p.m.) General admission is $10.
