Name:  Maureen C. Kenny, Ph.D.

Hometown: Bronx, N.Y

Job Title/Department: Professor of Counselor Education, College of Education

Campus: Modesto A. Maidique Campus

In a nutshell: I am the director of the master’s degree program in Counselor Education as well as teacher in this program. I also direct a program entitled “Kids Learning about Safety,” which is a personal safety program for bilingual families of young children.

Number of years at FIU: 15 years

What do you enjoy most about your job? The variability of tasks that I do. I interact with students through recruitment efforts, teaching and mentoring. I also meet other professionals who work as adjuncts for us and supervise our students. Professional writing, presenting and publishing are the tasks I really enjoy doing. I also have a lot of friends in different departments on campus so I enjoy seeing them from time to time.

What do you think faculty/staff/students should know about your department? We have a graduate program in counseling that enables students to become school counselors or mental health counselors. So any student who is interested in a career in the helping profession would benefit from studying in one of our programs.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why? I love the bridge between the College of Business and the library.  When I walk to the other side of campus, I like to stop and watch the turtles and fish.

If there’s one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU, what would it be? The campus is beautiful, the students are unique and the education is top notch. (Okay that’s three things!!)

Family snapshot: My husband (a clinical psychologist) and my 5-year-old triplets (girl, boy, girl)

Word that best describes you:  Organized

First paying job: Cashier at Sears in the children’s department

Favorite TV show:  “Law and Order”

Your proudest accomplishment: Having three beautiful, healthy and brilliant children.

What do you do when you’re not working at FIU? I love playing tennis, shopping and scrapbooking.
