Peek into FIU Theatre’s 2009-’10 Season

Known for its controversial selections and fresh remakes, FIU Theatre will kick off the 2009-’10 season with a dramatic production of “Sonia Flew” Sept. 24-Oct. 4 in the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC).

Named one of top theatre programs by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, FIU Theatre will present three more plays during the season: “A Lie of the Mind,” “Blithe Spirit” and “The Cherry Orchard.” Per tradition, each will be directed by FIU professors and performed, staged-designed and lit by their students.

“FIU Theatre has tapped into the dramatic side with this season’s productions. The shows explore multigenerational family relationships touching on family crisis, drama as well as some comedy,” said Kristine Burns, associate dean of Cultural Affairs at FIU. “We also wanted to incorporate FIU’s theme of internationalism, so we chose productions that showcased different cultures from around the world including Hispanic, Russian and American.”

Up first is “Sonia Flew,” by Melinda Lopez and directed by Jennifer Smith DeCastorverdes. The play follows an overwhelmed mother who learns that her son has enlisted in the military only weeks after Sept. 11, 2001. For more information, call 305-348-0496 or click here.
