Monday, Sept. 14, FIU President Mark Rosenberg and his wife Rosalie hosted the university’s annual reception honoring faculty members who have received tenure and/or promotion. Rosenberg and Provost Douglas Wartzok extended their appreciation and congratulations to 17 faculty members who were awarded tenure or tenure and promotion, and to 12 faculty who earned promotion effective in the 2009-2010 academic year.
Tenure of university faculty demands extraordinary accomplishments and stature and involves a rigorous review process by department committees and chairs, respective deans, the provost, the president and the FIU Board of Trustees. Faculty are selected for promotion primarily on the basis of their superior performance in research, scholarship, teaching and service.
The following faculty members were awarded tenure and promoted to the rank of associate professor: Jason Chandler, architecture; Heather Russel, English; Wenzhi Li, physics; Michael Sukop, earth & environment; Kaushik Dutta, decision sciences; Ken Johnson, finance; Suchismita Mishra, finance; William Newburry, management; Peter Clark, computer sciences; Mohammed Hadi, civil engineering; Tao Li, computer sciences; Roberto Panepucci, electrical and computer engineering; Raju Rangaswami, computer sciences; and Nikolaos Tsoukias, biomedical engineering.
Tenure only was awarded to associate professors Jessy Devieux, public health; Jose Gabilondo, law; and Howard Wasserman, law.
Faculty promoted to rank of professor were Jose Almirall, chemistry; Yong Cai, chemistry; John Clark, international relations; Timothy Collins, biology; Theodore Tachim Medjo, mathematics; Chun-Hao Chang, finance & real estate; Irma Becerra Fernandez, decision sciences; William Hardin, finance & real estate; Walfried Lassar, marketing; Maureen Kenny, education & psychological studies; Shu-Ching Chen, computer sciences; and Berrin Tansel, civil & environmental engineering.
