FIU beats WKU, Middle Tennessee, improves to 14-2 (4-0) on the season


By beating Western Kentucky, 3-1, FIU’s volleyball team won its first SBC game of the season at U.S. Century Bank Arena on Oct. 2. Two days later, the team gave coach Tomic her 100th coaching win at FIU after it defeated Middle Tennessee, 3-1.

The Golden Panthers walked away victorious from their first Sun Belt Conference game at U.S. Century Bank Arena at Modesto A. Maidique Campus on Oct. 2 after defeating Western Kentucky, 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 26-24, 25-13).

“We beat a very good team,” said head coach Danijela Tomic. “Western Kentucky is a dangerous team and they’re getting better and better.”

It would turn out to be a good weekend for Tomic: Two days later, the blue-and-gold team gave the coach her 100th coaching victory at FIU when it beat SBC rival Middle Tennessee, 3-1 (25-20, 27-29, 25-20, 26-24).

FIU now is 14-2 (4-0) on the season.

“It’s a great win for us,” Tomic said. “Middle Tennessee is always a tough team to play. We expected a match like this – a real fight, point for point. Opponents like Middle Tennessee make you better and I’m glad that we were tested and we passed the test. I’m very happy with this win.”

Up next for the Golden Panthers is a home game against Florida Atlantic on Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. The team then will hit the road for matches against Denver and North Texas on Oct. 9 and Oct. 11, respectively.
