FIU student-athletes continue their quest for glory


The Golden Panthers scored their first football win of the season, while the volleyball team remains unbeaten in SBC action following wins over North Texas and Denver. The women’s soccer team served up a victory as it closed a four-game home stand and their male counterparts lost an away game against UAB. Plus, find out how FIU swimming & diving, cross country and golf did in their respective away meets.

A win for FIU football

FIU scored its first football win of the season against WKU on Oct. 10.

Following the victory, kicker Dustin Rivest and wideout Greg Ellingson were recognized for their outstanding performances against WKU.

Rivest was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and was named Honorable Mention Place Kicker by FootballPerformance.com.

ESPN.com named Ellingson as an Honorable Mention Helmet Sticker recipient among non-automatic qualifying conferences.

Up next for the Golden Panthers is their Blackout Game against Troy on Oct. 17 at FIU Stadium at Modesto A. Maidique (MMC).

Let’s hear it for the volleyball team

FIU’s unstoppable volleyball beat North Texas and Denver on Oct. 11 and Oct. 9, respectively, each time with a 3-0 score.

With the win over North Texas, FIU secured its 10th straight volleyball victory, improving to 17-2 on the season and remaining unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference (SBC) play at 7-0.

The Golden Panthers will return to action Oct. 16 as they host a pair of SBC foes, Troy and South Alabama, at U.S. Century Bank Arena at MMC. (The game against the latter team is set for Oct. 18.)

The FIU women’s soccer team closed out its four-game home stand on arguably its best all-around performance of the season: a 5-1 victory over ULM on Oct. 11.

With the win, the Golden Panthers (6-5-3, 4-1-1) extended their unbeaten streak to five games and remain undefeated against the Warhawks in the overall series.

Sophomore forwards April Perry and Deana Rossi each scored two goals, becoming the first FIU pair since Michelle O’Brien and Sasja Odenyo in October 2001 (at UALR) to score multiple goals in one game. The goals were the first for Rossi this season and Perry now has scored four goals in the last three contests.

Up next, the Golden Panthers travel to South Alabama for a match on Oct. 16.

In men’s soccer action, FIU could not contain No. 25 UAB as the Golden Panthers lost an away game at Birmingham, 7-1.

The blue-and-gold team is 3-8-0, 0-4-0 C-USA on the season.

In swimming & diving news

The FIU swimming & diving team took part in the Phill Hansel Duals Oct. 9-10, as the Golden Panthers fell to host Houston, 162-56, and Rice, 138-66, in Houston, Texas.

Among the blue-and-gold highlights: FIU’s 200-meter medley relay time of 1:53.17 on Friday, as the foursome of junior Danielle Sneir, junior Erin Pavlick, freshman Chelsie Kidd and sophomore Mariangela Macchiavello took third place.

Sneir came up with one of Golden Panthers’ top performances for the weekend, taking sixth place in the 100-meter back with a time of 1:01.09.

In her first campaign with the Panthers, junior Yesica Rojas touched in 1:00.29 in the 100-meter fly event to take fifth place, while another newcomer, freshman Kelly Grace followed up with a fifth-place performance in the 50-meter free with a mark of 25.78.

On the 3-meter diving board, freshman Jamie Stinson scored a mark of 228.53 for third place and, later on in the meet, she would notch a score of 212.70 on the 1-meter board for another third-place finish.

FIU will return to action on Oct. 16 when the Golden Panthers host FAU at the Bay Vista Aquatic Center at Biscayne Bay Campus.

The men’s cross country team placed two runners among the Top 10 finishers at the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic on Oct. 10 in Orlando.

Blue-and-gold sophomore Ciprian Mejia (26:10.80) placed fifth among the 163 competing collegians, while teammate and fellow sophomore Sebastian Castillo (26:33.80) was ninth over the 8K men’s course.

FIU finished sixth of the 25 competing schools.

The women’s team finished in the top-half of the field finishing 13th of 30 teams. Freshman Tai Canady once again led the Golden Panthers with a 24th place showing among collegians, running the 5K course in 20:00.06.

FIU senior Catalina Ortiz (21:10.10) finished 72nd among all college runners, junior Karina Edwards (21:19.60) was 81st, sophomore Estefania Fierro (21:37.60) placed 94th and sophomore Ashley Aderman (23:24.20) was 145th in the field of 279 harriers.

And in golf news

The FIU women’s golf team finished in 11th place after the final round of the University of Missouri’s Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo., Oct. 5-6.

The Golden Panthers’ 54-hole team-total 74-over, 938, was 30 strokes behind team leader Wisconsin (908).

Individually, blue-and-gold junior Paula Hurtado led the squad, finishing tied for 18th place overall at 14-over, 230. Freshman Tania Tare, playing her first intercollegiate event, ended tied for 18th place (+14), while sophomore Lauren Blease ended tied at 59th (+24), freshman Nikki Dunn was tied for 63rd place at +25, and junior Cristina Marin (+32) was tied 76th in the field of 99 golfers.

The team will next hit the links when it hosts the 32nd annual FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational, Oct. 26-27, in Fort Myers.
