portiasimpson_millerThe title of Simpson Miller’s address is “A New Vision for a New World Reality: Prospects for the Anglophone Caribbean.”

Simpson Miller, the first Jamaican woman to serve as prime minister, assumed the leadership role in 2006, having served 17 years as a senior cabinet minister for labor and welfare. The leading architect of Jamaica’s Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism Development, the Hon. Leader of the Opposition has promoted and strengthened urban renewal and community development, leading to fundamental reforms in local government.

A member of the Council of Women World Leaders, Simpson Miller was awarded the International Olympic Committee’s 2007 World “Women and Sport” trophy for her outstanding dedication to women in Jamaican sport — both as athletes and administrators.

The event is organized by FIU’s African & African Diaspora Studies Program (AADS) and is cosponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, School of International and Public Affairs, Ruth K. and Shepard Broad International Lecture Series, Women’s Studies, AADS Graduate Students Association and the Latin American and Caribbean Center.
