Ice cream socials kick off 2009 United Way campaign

Tough economic times have not dampened the sense of goodwill and giving at FIU.

The university will launch its 2009 United Way campaign with ice cream socials on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Modesto A. Maidique Campus and Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Biscayne Bay Campus. The events, scheduled for noon, will feature music and raffles.

United Way provides critical services to the most needy and more vulnerable in South Florida. The organization’s work focuses on education, income and health. Donations help children achieve their potential, secure financial stability for families and individuals and improve people’s health.

“Through our partnership with the United Way of Miami-Dade, FIU continues to provide another avenue for us to improve the lives of those who live, work and raise their families in this community, including members of our own FIU family,” said President Mark B. Rosenberg in a letter to the university community.

The goal for the 2009 campaign is $300,000. Donors can contribute to the non-profit organization of their choice, including FIU’s efforts. Last year, in spite of hard economic times, the university community raised nearly $250,000 for the non-profit organization.

This year’s campaign will run through Dec. 4.

Save the date for the campaign’s closing event, the annual auction scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. in the GC Ballrooms. Loyal United Way contributors will be recognized for their support of the community.
