In Panthers play Oct. 23-25


The Panthers went for broke the weekend of Oct. 23-25, giving it all out on the volleyball court, soccer and football fields and the tennis court, among other fields of play. Read on to find out how they did.

On and on for women’s soccer

The women’s soccer team recorded its sixth victory in a row, breaking the school record for longest winning streak held by the 1992, ‘93 and 2001 teams, when the blue-and-gold team defeated Arkansas State, 3-2, in Sun Belt Conference (SBC) action on Oct. 25 at Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC).

With the win, FIU is now 10-5-3 on the season, 8-1-1 in SBC action.

The Panthers’ victory over Arkansas State followed an Oct. 23 1-0 win over Arkansas-Little Rock.

FIU will wrap up its regular season on Oct. 30 – Senior Day – against SBC foe Florida Atlantic at MMC before heading to Boca Raton for the SBC Tournament Nov, 4-7.

In tennis news…

The Panthers were eliminated from the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Championships on Oct. 25.

Sophomore Christine Seredni played the best tennis of her intercollegiate career against South Florida, reaching the consolation singles semifinals round, while blue-and-gold senior Maria Vallasciani lost to Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals and the doubles team of Liset Brito and Priscilla Castillo fell to UM.

Volleyball unbeaten in SBC action

Following a 3-2 win over UALR on Oct. 23, the volleyball team scored its 14th win in a row on Oct. 24 – final score: 3-0 – at a home game against Arkansas State at U.S. Century Bank Arena.

The Panthers improved to 21-2 on the season and remain unbeaten in SBC action at 11-0.

The football team gave Arkansas State its all at an away SBC game on Oct. 24, but the Red Wolves proved too much for the Panthers, who lost 27-10.

The blue-and-gold team is now 1-6 on the season, 1-3 in conference play.

Up next for the Panthers is a home game against Louisiana-Lafayette on Halloween. The game is scheduled for noon at FIU Stadium.

Men’s soccer recovers

The men’s soccer team broke an eight-game losing streak against South Carolina on Oct. 24 with a 0-0 double-overtime tie against the Gamecocks.

The Panthers are now 5-9-1 on the season, 0-5-1 in Conference USA action.

Up next, FIU returns to the field on Nov. 1 for the final home game of the season against Kentucky.

In swimming & diving news…

FIU hosted its second consecutive home meet on Oct. 24 as the Panthers faced Florida Gulf Coast at the Bay Vista Aquatic Center at Biscayne Bay Campus. The Panthers fell to the Eagles, 205.5-92.5.

The blue-and-gold team will return to action on Nov. 14, when the squad welcomes back former FIU swimmers for the annual Alumni Meet at BBC.
