In Panthers Play Nov. 13-15


FIU saw its stellar season on the SBC volleyball court earn Panthers a No. 1 seed at the SBC Championships, while the football team made everyone “Feel the Pride” at Homecoming. Plus, the basketball teams saw mixed results as they geared up for home openers at U.S. Century Bank Arena on Nov. 17.

In basketball news

The men’s team fell to Tulsa, 81-49, on Nov. 15, while the women edged Western Michigan for a 64-61 overtime win on Nov. 14 at the Sheraton Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational.

Isiah Thomas’ boys are 0-3 on the season (the Panthers also lost to Monmouth, 99-70, on Nov. 13), while Cindy Russo’s girls improved to 1-1 on the season, following their Nov. 13 27-71 loss to N.C. State.

Both teams will open at home, at U.S. Century Bank Arena, on Tuesday, Nov. 17 – the women are up first, playing Jacksonville at 5 p.m., followed by the men who go up against Florida Memorial at 8 p.m.

Football recovers

The Panthers came from behind and secured a 35-28 victory over North Texas on Nov. 14, Homecoming Saturday, at FIU Stadium.

“It was a pretty wild football game,” said head coach Mario Cristobal. “A tale of two halves, for sure.”

The blue-and-gold team is 3-7 on the season, 3-4 in Sun Belt Conference action.

FIU is now Gainesville-bound, looking forward to its first-ever meeting with No. 1 UF on Nov. 21.

In volleyball news

FIU clinched the SBC regular season with its 21st straight win, against FAU, on Nov. 14, earning the No. 1 seed at the SBC Championships Nov. 19-21.

The Panthers will face off against No. 8 seed North Texas in quarterfinal action on Nov. 19 in Kentucky.
