New York Times journalist to speak on Obama foreign policy challenges


giacomo.75Foreign policy journalist and member of The New York Times editorial board Carol Giacomo will speak on “The Main Foreign Policy Challenges Facing President Obama: Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Threat of Nuclear Weapons” in a presentation Friday, Nov. 20.

The event is being hosted by the FIU Student Government Association, The New York Times, and Global Learning for Global Citizenship, FIU’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). Her talk will be from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Wertheim Performing Arts Center (WPAC 170) and is free and open to the public.

Giacomo joined The New York Times editorial board in 2007. As a former diplomatic correspondent for Reuters in Washington, Giacomo covered foreign policy for more than two decades and traveled more than a million miles to nearly 100 countries. She was a senior fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace and has been a guest lecturer at the U.S. National War College, as well as other academic institutions. Giacomo is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Giacomo’s presentation is part of the newly-enhanced New York Times Readership Program at MMC. As part of the SGA-funded readership program, New York Times newspapers are made available to students daily, free of charge, at locations across the MMC campus.

The presentation is also part of FIU’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Global Learning for Global Citizenship. The QEP is the centerpiece of FIU’s 2010 reaffirmation of accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The purpose of Global Learning for Global Citizenship is to provide every FIU undergraduate with educational opportunities to achieve the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of global citizenship.
