Medicine and Society professor awarded Marshall Memorial Fellowship

p-brewsterHerbert Wertheim College of Medicine’s Dr. Luther Brewster, assistant professor of Medicine and Society, has been awarded the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) for 2010.

Brewster, one of only 54 chosen for the competitive nationwide fellowship, will spend 24 days traveling to five cities in Europe, learning about the institutions and people that drive Europe’s cities, regions, countries and multilateral systems through meetings with local counterparts. The goal of the MMF program is to educate emerging American and European leaders on the importance of transatlantic relationship and encourage them to collaborate on a range of international and domestic policy challenges.

Brewster works with underserved populations identifying health risks created by programs, policies and projects typically not viewed as having a relationship to health.

“To be recognized for working with a group that is not usually recognized is humbling,” said Brewster. “It’s reaffirming to to know that the path I’ve chosen, my life’s mission is making a difference.”

Brewster hopes the experience will be an intellectual partnership. “I’d like to share what we’ve learned here at FIU by serving such a diverse population. And see were my grassroots efforts fit in the big picture. This will only yield benefits.”

Prior to joining the faculty at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in 2006, Brewster consulted on numerous community development projects, including the expansion of the 125th street business district in Harlem, the Arsenal, F.C. Emirates Stadium and a housing regeneration project in London, England. He received his Ph.D. in Health Promotion and Behavior from the University of Georgia.

Brewster is the co-founder of the Historic Overtown Public Health Empowerment (HOPE) Collaborative.
