FIU helps limited-income students and families secure financial aid for college

MIAMI – This weekend Florida International University will host College Goal Sunday, an event designed to help families and college-bound students fill out the necessary paperwork that will help them pay for school.

At College Goal Sunday, students will receive free expert advice and help in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA) for the 2010-2011 academic year.

College Goal Sunday will be held Sunday, January 31st at the Modesto Madique Campus of FIU from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. in the Green Library, Room 265.

“FIU financial aid experts will come together to assist families in completing this critical form that can be very intimidating,” said FIU Director of Financial Aid Francisco Valines.  “No matter where you are going to college next fall, it’s important to come out and take advantage of this free help.  This can help ensure that the funds will be there when you need them,” said Valines.

The form known as the FAFSA, is used to apply for federal student aid such as the Pell Grant, work-study money, and loans to assist students in funding their college education. They also may use this form to apply for most state and some private financial aid.

College Goal Sunday is open to all college-bound students regardless of age. Whether a traditional student right out of high school or an adult who is returning or pursuing higher education for the first time, College Goal Sunday will help these incoming students complete the FAFSA, accurately and on time.  All students who complete the form will be eligible for incentives ranging from gift cards for school supplies to scholarships.
