FIU presents ‘Justice after Saddam: War Crimes Trials in Iraq’

WHAT: Iraq’s political stability and successful hannibaltravistransition to democracy includes the prosecution of leading figures under the Saddam Hussein regime. Such top Baath Party officials, which included Ali Hasan al Majid (Chemical Ali) and Taha Yasin Ramadan, participated in heinous atrocities against fellow Iraqis since Saddam’s rise to power in the late 1970s up until Iraq’s occupation by coalition forces in 2003. These crimes against humanity included systematic torture, mass killings, and ethnic cleansing. FIU’s Middle East Society will present a lecture by Hannibal Travis entitled, “Justice after Saddam: War Crimes Trials in Iraq” which will explore some of these trials and the prosecution process itself.

He has published widely on genocide and human rights and is the author of the first comprehensive history of physical and cultural genocide in the Middle East and North Africa.
