In a nutshell: The Women’s Center at FIU provides women with programs and services related to their intellectual, professional, social and emotional growth. We educate and advocate for systemic changes that will improve the lives of women and men. As the director, I am responsible for administering programs and services to attain this mission. Our major programs include the Mentoring Partnerships program, which we facilitate in collaboration with Alumni Relations; Strong Women, Strong Girls, an afterschool mentoring program for girls in grades 3-5; the Sisterhood weekend retreat; the Women Who Lead conference; and the Take Back the Night event in collaboration with the Victim Advocacy Center.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Developing relationships with students. It is so rewarding to be involved in their personal, professional and academic growth and development and help them succeed. I am also fortunate that I have the opportunity to collaborate with talented colleagues throughout the university on projects that are mutually beneficial.

What do you think faculty/staff and students should know about your department?

Our curriculum is designed to provide opportunities to enhance the personal and professional development of all. Any student, faculty or staff member interested in women’s issues will find a connecting point in our center.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

The Graham Center. It is always hustling and bustling and is a great place to connect with students and colleagues.

If there is one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU, what would it be?

The talent our students, staff and faculty possess.

Family snapshot:

My immediate and extended family resides in Massachusetts. Although they visit me and I visit them frequently, I am fortunate to have developed a strong family away from home at FIU.

Word that best describes you: Convivial.

First paying job: I was a waitress at Kozy Kabin, a small family-owned restaurant in my hometown, while in high school.

Favorite TV show: Grey’s Anatomy.

What is playing on your iPod?

I’m loving Alicia Keys’ new album.

Your proudest accomplishment:

To date, achieving the status of doctoral candidate. I will defend my dissertation in May.

What do you do when you are not working at FIU?

I’m an avid exerciser and completed my first triathlon in April – I actually placed third in my division!
