RecycleMania: Oh say, can you recycle?

By Ali Dutton

FIU has a great single-stream recycling program. Single stream means you can place all recyclable material into the same bins. You can put paper materials, plastic, glass and aluminum in the blue bins around campus. Through this program, FIU generates and recycles on average more than 200,000 pounds a month.

The university wants to increase that number so it can rise to the top of RecycleMania, a national recycling competition in which FIU is participating. There are more than 600 schools competing this year to see which school will recycle the most in 10 weeks.

Week 4 results are in:

Gorilla Prize – Highest gross tonnage of recyclables -2nd out of 13 Florida schools and 39th out of 323 in the Nation. Last week FIU ranked 2nd in the state.

Per Capita Classic – Cumulative recyclables in pounds per person – 5th out of 13 Florida schools and 125th out of 323 in the Nation. Last week FIU ranked 3rd in the state.

Grand Champion – percentage of waste stream recycled – 7th out of 12 Florida schools and 135 out of 247 in the Nation. Last week FIU ranked 3rd in the state.

FIU has recycled 194,240 pounds in the first four weeks of the competition.

The competition runs until March 27, so please do your part and recycle all you can while on any FIU campus.
