Former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferré to discuss Puerto Rico’s role in U.S.-Latin American Relations


WHAT:  Former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferré, who is active in Puerto Rican politics, will discuss “Puerto Rico and its Role in U.S. and Latin American Relations” Ferré, a Democratic candidate to represent Florida in the U.S. Senate, will discuss the impact of Puerto Rico on the United States and Latin America from the perspective of his different political roles. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session. The lecture is being co-sponsored by FIU’s Latin American and Caribbean Center, Puerto Rico Statehood Students Association – FIU Chapter, and FIU College Democrats. The event is free and open to the public.

WHO: Maurice Ferré is the former six-term mayor of the City of Miami and a candidate for the United States Senate. Born in Puerto Rico, he began his career in public service as a member of the Florida House of Representatives and then went on to be elected a commissioner of the City of Miami. He served as the Mayor of Miami from 1973 until 1985. After his terms as mayor, Ferré has involved himself in far-reaching business interests, public service and commentary on current and political affairs. Ferré, a graduate of the University of Miami, resides in Miami.
