Hot Governmental Relations update: May 14, 2010

With the conclusion of the 2010 State Legislative session, the state budget is sitting on Gov. Charlie Crist’s desk. Florida’s governor has 14 days left to do one of three things: approve the budget, veto it in its entirety, or veto specific line items within the bill. Please let Gov. Crist know that you support the projects listed below:

Miami-Dade Department of Health –  Consolidated State DOH facility in the FIU Health Sciences Complex: This project would allow the Miami-Dade County Health Department to consolidate its administrative functions—now scattered in several leased facilities located throughout the county—to FIU in a new DOH facility to be built for the Health Department by FIU. There would allow tremendous opportunities of teaching, research and clinical programs between the Health Department and FIU. It would also offer a singular opportunity to serve the unique public health needs of a diverse county population. This project has been in the works since 2005, and was supported by a unanimous Miami-Dade County Commission resolution in 2008.

Student Support Complex: This project would consolidate admissions, financial aid, advising and veterans’ services for FIU’s 40,000+ students, a cornerstone of President Rosenberg’s new student-centered focus.

Chiller Plant: This project would allow for the complete expansion of the Health Sciences Complex at Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

Stocker Astro-Physics Tower: This project would augment private funding to construct a 4-story astronomy observing platform for 700 students. This project will expand the teaching facilities for students and will also allow increased community outreach programs.

Neuroscience Center: This project would help the university meet critical needs in the areas of diagnosis, treatment, research and education of the chronic diseases of multiple sclerosis/Alzheimer’s/Parkinson’s diseases. The program has been developed in consultation with Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program, MS Center of Florida Foundation, and the Public Health Trust.

Democracy Conference: This project will support three sets of activities related to promoting democracy in the hemisphere, the economic well-being of South Florida and supporting the central role of the State of Florida as the crossroads and economic hub of the hemisphere through conferences co-hosted with The Miami Herald.
