Popular Tuesday Times Roundtable at MMC and BBC this semester

Expanding its programming to include the Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) this semester, the popular Tuesday Times Roundtable series is in full swing at Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC) and BBC this semester. A series of weekly discussions of New York Times articles on global issues, events and trends, the series brings together students and members of the FIU community to share a free lunch and stimulating conversation.

More than 600 students, faculty and staff have participated in the program.

FIU faculty members from various disciplines, staff members and administrators serve as moderators. They select a topic in advance based on student suggestions. Discussions are lively and allow students to interact with professors and administrators outside of the classroom.

The MMC series takes place every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in the Graham Center, room 150. Free lunch is provided.

The BBC series takes place every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in the Wolfe University Center, room 159. Free lunch is provided.

The roundtable discussions began in the fall of 2009. Topics have included alternative energy, the justification for war, religion depiction in new movies, immigration in the United States, early childhood education, climate change, Haiti’s future, cell phone use in rural areas, copyright issues and YouTube.

Tuesday Times Roundtable is part of FIU's Quality Enhancement Plan.

The MMC series is sponsored by the Office of Global Learning Initiatives, The New York Times and the MMC Student Government Association. The BBC series is sponsored by Office of Global Learning Initiatives, The New York Times and the BBC Student Government Association, the BBC Campus Life and Orientation Office, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Office of the Vice Provost at BBC and the FIU Libraries.

Students who would like to suggest a topic for discussion, as well as faculty, staff members and administrators who wish to moderate a discussion please email María C. Cedeño to mcedeno@fiu.edu. The updated schedule with topic details is available on the Global Learning calendar on goglobal.fiu.edu.

The Office of Global Learning Initiatives (OGLI) was created in August 2008 to facilitate the development of the Global Learning for Global Citizenship. Global learning is an educational approach that fosters the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of global citizenship through active, team-based, and interdisciplinary exploration of essential questions and real-world problems. Through the process of global learning, all FIU undergraduates will acquire knowledge of interconnected world conditions, the ability to analyze issues from multiple perspectives, and the willingness to engage in local, global, international, and intercultural problem solving.
