Farmer’s Market, Walk on Water join Homecoming fever

The Farmer’s Market is joining forces with the College of Architecture + The Arts and will be part of the Walk on Water event on Nov. 3 at noon.

As part of Homecoming week festivities, the Farmer’s Market will move from the south side of the Green Library to the north side, near the edge of the lake behind the Green Library, near where professor Jaime Canaves’ students will be walking on water for a grade. Students will be kept afloat by shoes designed and built in teams to attempt to cross the 175-foot-wide lake.

“Bringing together Walk on Water and the Farmer’s Market is great because it is the merging of an old tradition with a new tradition,” Canaves said.

For the past three years, the Farmer’s Market has been offering fresh, locally grown organic fruits and vegetables to students, faculty and staff at an affordable price. The market is a weekly event sponsored by the FIU Organic Farmer’s Market Consortium in a collaborative effort with the University Health Services, the Healthy University Task Force and many student organizations.

Ian Wogan, an FIU student and president of the market, said that the merging of the Walk of Water contest with the Farmer’s Market would help to get students involved with the initiative.

“It is an incredible opportunity for the Farmer’s Market to reach out to the community,” he said.
