FIU names Howard Lipman Senior Vice President for Advancement

Howard Lipman, FIU’s former vice president for University Advancement, is rejoining the university as senior vice president for University Advancement and executive director of the FIU Foundation.

Lipman, 47, comes to FIU from Ohio University, where he has been the vice president for University Advancement and president and CEO of the Ohio University Foundation since 2006. Lipman, who will assume his new duties on Nov. 29, was previously at FIU from 2002-2006 in a similar leadership position.

At FIU, Lipman will oversee a $750 million fundraising campaign. The campaign was recently approved by the FIU Foundation.

“We are thrilled to have Howard back on our team,” said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg. “This campaign will take FIU to the next level as a student-centered urban public research university that is locally and globally engaged. With Howard at the helm, we look forward to a successful campaign.”

Under Lipman’s leadership, Ohio University raised more than $200 million. This included a $28 million naming gift for the College of Education, a $13.3 million gift for arts education and a $7.5 million lead gift for the Scripps College of Communication. He also helped to secure a $95 million gift for the Russ College of Engineering and Technology – one of the most significant gifts in the history of Ohio University.

Lipman worked closely with academic leaders from throughout the university in the development and execution of Ohio University’s $450 million fundraising campaign, “The Promise Lives.” The campaign, which is more than halfway to its goal, supports core academic initiatives at the university, including student scholarships, endowed professorships for faculty, research, campus building renovation, and expanded outreach programs pivoting around medical care and a new Kids on Campus program.

“My family and I are very enthusiastic about returning to our home and our FIU family,” Lipman said. “ I look forward to working with President Rosenberg, the alumni, leadership volunteers, deans, faculty, staff and administration to accomplish the academic goals of FIU through our next and most aggressive campaign.”

Among his other accomplishments, Lipman expanded and streamlined the Ohio Alumni Association, which has 42 alumni chapters now focused on philanthropic giving, admissions and career network/job placement services for graduates. At FIU, Lipman’s division will include Alumni Relations.

Lipman and his wife Sara have three children.
