Steven Moll named BBC vice provost

FIU Provost & Executive Vice President Douglas Wartzok announced Jan. 4 that Steven V. Moll has accepted the position of vice provost for Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) after having served as interim vice provost since July 2009.

Steven V. Moll

“My consultations with administrators and faculty at BBC confirmed my observations that Steve has done an excellent job in the interim role and it is exceedingly unlikely that we would find a more qualified candidate if we conducted a national search,” Wartzok said. “Certainly, we could never find a candidate with the intimate understanding of the campus going back to its founding in 1977.”

As interim vice provost, Moll has been a strong advocate for the campus and its programs.

He has worked hard to improve the physical plant, maintain course offerings, expand programs, enhance cross-disciplinary activities, develop philanthropic support for the campus and engage community leaders. The campus figures prominently in two of the four themes of the new Worlds Ahead strategic plan and in the future development of the 2010-2020 university master plan. A strong and committed leader such as Vice Provost Moll will assure that the campus and the university capitalize on these opportunities.

At FIU, Moll earned his bachelor’s of science degree in hotel and motel management in 1976 and subsequently earned a master’s of science in hotel and food service management in 1977. Six months after earning his master’s, he was hired as an instructor in the School of Hotel, Food and Travel Services (now known as the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management) teaching accounting, hotel operations and hospitality information technology courses.

In 1980, Moll was promoted to assistant professor and started a 17-year tenure as one of the school’s academic advisors. He also edited the school’s alumni newsletter and served three terms on the faculty senate. In 1987, he was promoted to associate professor with tenure. Ten years later, he was made director of the school’s program in Broward, where he served until its dissolution in 2001.

Upon returning to BBC, he was reassigned as the school’s director of graduate programs until 2004. In 2005, as part of a university-wide reorganization, he served as the director of the College of Business Administration at BBC. He held that position until July 2009.

Through the years, Moll has served FIU as a fundraiser, member of the Alumni Board of Directors, member and chair of the Commencement Committee, member of the University Sabbatical Committee, member and chair of the University Curriculum Committee and as the emcee for a variety of university events, including the auctioneer for the United Way live auction.

He is an active member of the National Restaurant Association and Council for Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Educators, where he was an officer in the Florida/Caribbean Chapter leading up to being its president in 2007-2008.

Last January. he was elected faculty chair of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, a position he still holds. In addition, he is in the dissertation phase of pursuing an Ed.D. degree in educational leadership and policy studies.
