FIU and UM presidents launch Miami Consortium for the study of Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) at Florida International University and the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at University of Miami are launching the Miami Consortium at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15.

FIU President Mark Rosenberg and UM President Donna E. Shalala will be present and will deliver remarks on the joint venture. LACC Director Cristina Eguizábal and CLAS Director Ariel Armony also will participate.

This event will serve as a celebration of the newly-formed Miami Consortium for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, which has been designated a National Resource Center for Latin America by the U.S. Department of Education.  This award solidifies LACC and CLAS’ place among the top centers for the study of Latin America and the Caribbean in the nation while reinforcing Miami’s role as an economic and cultural gateway to the region.

The mission of the consortium is to promote research and stimulate public awareness of all aspects of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as relations with the United States and countries outside the Western Hemisphere.

Through the combined strengths and efforts of LACC and CLAS the consortium is able to foster national and international linkages, spur research and regional understanding, and provide cultural and academic exchanges. This undertaking has been augmented by a $1 million Title VI National Resource Center grant.

With the grant, the consortium has embarked on increased outreach and training at all levels, including K-12 students and educators, journalists, government officials, and the business community.

The event will be held at the Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Avenue.  It is by invitation only; members of the press are invited to attend.
