WHAT: While many students are looking forward to some rest and relaxation this spring break, close to 300 FIU students will spend their time helping others through their participation in FIU’s Alternative Spring Break program. This year, a group of students will be going to the Galapagos Islands, the southernmost site in FIU Alternative Spring Break history, to work on environmental issues, such as the replacement of invasive plant species. In the Dominican Republic, FIU students will work with disadvantaged children, while in Willow River, Minn., students will work on the renovation of Camp Heartland, a national nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of families impacted by HIV/AIDS. Students also will be traveling to other parts of the world to work on issues such as advocacy for women and urban poverty.
WHO: Alternative Spring Break, a national student organization, was founded in 1991 and FIU established its program in 1994. With the motto “changing the world, one break at a time,” the organization sends college volunteers throughout the world every year to help them become engaged global citizens.
WHEN: Students will participate in Alternative Break from March 11-22. For more information contact the FIU Center for Leadership and Service at 305-348-6995.
Media Contacts: Yusila Ramirez at 786-547-0779 or Anna Lopes at 305-348-6944.
What a fantastic idea for students to partake in such an important project. The Galapagos Islands are one of the most important ecological and environmental locations in the world, and it´s people like this who contribute to its continued success. Thanks for your support and “voluntad”. Have a wonderful Spring Break.
I participated in this program two years in a row at FIU and it was an amazing experience each time!
Wonderful to read FIU students can participate in global events and reliefs. I would like to invite FIU to come to Peru and do some work with us in helping others. I was a student of FIU, and it got my heart pounding about the volunteers.
