Governmental Relations launches D.C. Summer Internship Experience

Each semester, many of FIU’s best and brightest arrive in the nation’s capital to pursue their dream on Capitol Hill, at federal agencies or in the non-profit and private sectors.

Who better than these ambassadors to share how we are World’s Ahead and help advance FIU’s agenda?

FIU’s Office of Governmental Relations is asking for your help in identifying students who have been selected for internships in Washington, D.C. The office seeks to add value to the students’ internship experiences and bolster FIU’s relationships with key federal agencies while engaging key alumni in the region.

“We’re interested in engaging these students during their time in Washington. We’d like to create opportunities for them to learn more about the federal policy arena,” says Carlos Becerra, director of federal relations for the university. His office is working on this initiative with the Offices of Engagement, Career Services and the D.C. Capital Panthers Alumni Chapter. “We see them as valuable partners.”

Advancing FIU’s federal agenda and research priorities in Washington, D.C., involves building exposure, fostering relationships and strengthening the university’s reputation at key agencies where our students will be working.

Increasing the number and quality of these internships are also critical goals of the university’s recently announced Worlds Ahead Strategic Plan. Over time, successful, well-informed interns will also increase the presence of FIU advocates employed within these agencies.

By introducing these students to the D.C. Capital Panthers alumni network (now numbering more than 1,000) and fostering mentorship, Becerra hopes to build the students’ professional network and motivate alumni to give back to their alma mater.

To help identify students who may be working this summer in Washington, D.C.,  please email the Office of Federal Relations at dcintern@fiu.edu.

“Washington, D.C., can be an exciting and vibrant place in the summer,” says Becerra “It’s also a place where careers and causes take unexpected paths based on the power of relationships. We’re asking for help in positioning our students for success and advancing FIU’s priorities.”
