Horatio Alger Awards honor Leonardo DiCaprio, Herbert A. Wertheim and more


On April 8 in Washington, D.C., the board of directors of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., honored 11 award recipients. Among them was FIU’s own Herbert A. Wertheim, founding chairman of the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, chairman and CEO of Brain Power, Inc., and chairman of the Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Family Foundation.

The eleven individuals honored included Leonardo DiCaprioRoger Eugene Ailes, chairman and CEO of FOX News Channel and chairman of the Fox Television Stations Group; and Michael R. Bloomberg, mayor of the City of New York and founder and owner of Bloomberg, L.P.

Recipients are dedicated community leaders who demonstrate initiative and commitment to excellence – illustrated by extraordinary achievements accomplished through honesty, hard work, self-reliance and perseverance over adversity. Potential members must have a strong commitment to assisting those less fortunate and be willing to contribute to the mission of providing scholarships for younger generations.
