Nestor Torres presents FIU Danzon/Charanga Ensemble; establishes “Cachao” Scholarship Fund

WHAT: Latin Grammy Award Winner Nestor Torres will present a concert with his Danzon/Charanga Ensemble to raise funds for the FIU School of Music and the establishment of the Israel “Cachao” López Scholarship Fund. The scholarship would benefit students who are members of the nascent ensemble.

WHO: Even though his career has developed within the Jazz realm, Nestor Torres has a long and enduring relationship with the Cuban music styles of Charanga and Danzones; his first job as a flautist in New York City when he first arrived from Puerto Rico was playing in this genre. He has toured and recorded with Israel “Cachao” Lopez, as well as with Gloria Estefan on her Grammy Award winning album ‘Mi Tierra’.

Torres is now a visiting guest artist at FIU, where he established the FIU Danzon/Charanga Ensemble in 2010. Composed of FIU School of Music students, this ensemble specializes in the performance of the two musical styles with a mix of strings, piano, bass, Latin percussion, and vocals.

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center located in the Modesto A. Maidique Campus, 10910 SW 17 Street in southwest Miami-Dade County.
