Alumnus tweeting from final launch of Atlantis July 7-8

Andres Almeida will tweet history as shuttle program nears retirement

FIU graduate Andres Almeida has been selected as one of 150 @NASA Twitter followers to attend a two-day Tweetup, July 7 – 8, for the final launch of Atlantis before the space shuttle program is retired. Atlantis is targeted to launch on July 8 at approximately 11:40 a.m. EDT on mission STS-135 to the International Space Station.

While at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Almeida will interact with NASA shuttle technicians, engineers, astronauts, managers and NASA’s social media team as well as tour the Vehicle Assembly Building. He will view the shuttle launch from the press site.

“One of my earliest memories was running through Kennedy Space Center’s Rocket Garden with my late brother Francisco when I was five years old,” says Almeida. “I’m going to dedicate this experience to him.”

Ameida, who was selected through a lottery system in which more than 5,500 @NASA Twitter followers applied, says he’s looking forward to representing FIU. “It was in my advertising and marketing classes that I realized  social media played a major role in our lives. My professors would emphasized how important it is to network and to make yourself visible. I believe my active role in social media ultimately led me here.”
