Florida House Speaker Cannon to Visit FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine

WHAT: Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon will join the Miami-Dade legislative delegation in a visit to the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine to learn about its progress and meet FIU students, faculty and administrators. The visit also will allow the delegation to learn about the latest technologies being used to teach the next generation of medical and nursing students, including a tour of a state-of-the-art Nursing and Health Sciences STAR Simulation Lab that mimics a hospital emergency room—virtual patients included.

In 2006, the Florida Board of Governors authorized the creation of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. The college was established in response to a recommendation from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in the mid-1990s. The AAMC recommended expansion of existing medical schools and creation of new medical schools to meet increasing demands created by growth of the U.S. population at a time when the physician population is aging and retiring.

WHO: Speaker of the House Dean Cannon will join Chairman of the Miami-Dade Delegation Carlos Lopez-Cantera and several members of the Miami-Dade Delegation to greet FIU Board of Trustees Chairman Albert Maury, FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg, College of Medicine Dean Dr. John Rock and College of Nursing and Health Sciences Dean Ora L. Strickland. Herbert Wertheim, founding chairman of the College of Medicine and trustee emeritus of the FIU Board of Trustees, will also be in attendance.

WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 10 a.m. in Academic Health Center 2, Room 160, on FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, 11200 SW 8th St. in Southwest Miami-Dade County.
