FIU architecture students Walk on Water

WHAT: In an annual rite of passage, College of Architecture + the Arts Professor Jaime Canaves’ students have created shoes that allow them to walk on water. To get an A, students must make it to the other side of a lake in a race aptly named “Walk on Water.” First prize receives $500. Everyone else who crosses the 175-foot-wide lake also gets an A and the opportunity to drop their lowest grade. Eventually, 85 percent of students make it across the lake.

WHY:
The annual event is part of Canaves’ requirements to pass his class. The race is an event that brings alumni, students, faculty and staff together. Dozens in the university community gather along the shore to view the race.

WHEN:
Tuesday, November 8 at 11:30 a.m.

WHERE:
Students will race across the lake behind the Green Library on the Modesto Maidique Campus, 11200 SW 8th Street in Southwest Miami-Dade County.
