FIU concert features Cuban music in the U.S.


WHAT:  The Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University will present “Classically Cuban: Cuban Music in the U.S.,” a concert of music compiled by author and independent scholar Emilio Cueto.  The program includes pieces written from 1840 through the 1990s by Cuban composers living in both Cuba and the U.S.  Highlights include songs from award-winning films that brought Cuban music to the masses and touched millions of people across the globe. An ensemble of Miami musicians, under the direction of FIU professor Armando Tranquilino, will play the selections.  A reception will follow the concert.

WHEN AND WHERE:  The concert will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center Concert Hall at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, 11200 SW 8th Street in Southwest Miami-Dade. Use the FIU main entrance at Southwest 16th Street and 107th Avenue.  Parking will be available in the Blue Garage, across from the Concert Hall.  Tickets cost $35 for adults; $30 for senior citizens and students; and $15 for faculty, employees and students at FIU or UM.
